Bryan Schutmaat’s photographs were all taken at different times and in different places; Texas, Montana, Colorado, and Kansas, yet there’s a definite cohesive vision and atmosphere that helps sets the groundwork for issue 003. Schutmaat’s images beautifully exemplify a theme of rural America, forgotten places, both the physical and social landscape. Schutmaat’s work has been widely exhibited and published. He has won numerous awards, including a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, the Aperture Portfolio Prize, and an Aaron Siskind Fellowship. Bryan’s prints are held in many collections, such as Baltimore Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Pier 24 Photography, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He co-founded the imprint, Trespasser.
